‘Protesters are not criminals. Dissent is lifeblood of a democracy’

India’s space for dissent is shrinking, as students, activists and ordinary citizens face arrests, prolonged detentions for peaceful acts of protest, Supreme Court judge Justice Ujjal Bhuyan has warned.
Restrictive bail conditions, that turn process into punishment, he added, only add to the atmosphere of fear, discouraging free speech.
