Gujarat to build all new urban internal roads using cement concrete
The decision has been taken to end the recurring problem of asphalt roads getting damaged in the monsoon season

Gandhinagar: The state cabinet, which met on Tuesday, decided that all new internal roads in municipal corporations and municipalities will be constructed using cement concrete (CC) instead of asphalt. The decision has been taken to end the recurring problem of asphalt roads getting damaged in the monsoon season.Govt spokesperson and minister Jitu Vaghani said the state govt has opted for the more durable but costlier construction material despite costs increasing by around 30% to 40%.Vaghani said govt had prioritised long-term public benefit over the higher initial expenditure. He added that the lower maintenance needs of CC roads would help reduce road repair costs over time. An official statement said that since CC roads have a longer lifespan, and are better suited to heavy traffic, the move will eliminate recurring problems such as potholes and damaged road surfaces.Vaghani said that gradually, asphalt roads in rural areas that are prone to waterlogging will also be converted into CC roads. He added the state govt is already laying CC roads in village settlements under the Suvidhapath scheme.
