Patna: A confrontation between the ruling coalition and the opposition over student protests disrupted Bihar Legislative Assembly for nearly an hour on Friday, the final day of the five-day monsoon session.The uproar began soon after the House assembled for the day’s proceedings. RJD member Alok Mehta stood up and demanded an immediate adjournment motion to discuss student unrest across the state. The protests, which began in Patna earlier this week, intensified on Thursday and spread to several districts.Mehta said several students were injured in lathicharge and alleged that police in Jehanabad had fired on Thursday. He urged speaker Prem Kumar to suspend regular business and allow a debate on what he described as attempts to repress students raising legitimate demands.Opposition members from the RJD, Congress and Left parties then rushed into the well of the House, raising slogans against the govt’s handling of the protests. They accused the administration of using excessive force to silence young people seeking transparency in national competitive examinations.The treasury benches strongly rejected the allegations and accused the opposition of politicising a sensitive student issue for electoral gains. Parliamentary affairs minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary led the govt’s response, saying the administration was fully committed to maintaining law and order. He said those indulging in violence and attacks under the cover of protests would not be spared.As sloganeering escalated into a face-off between the two sides, the speaker repeatedly appealed for order and asked members to return to their seats so that Question Hour could proceed. With the din continuing, he adjourned the House for an hour.When the assembly reassembled, regular legislative business resumed amid continuing tension, bringing a turbulent end to the brief monsoon session.On Thursday, many students and at least 14 police personnel were injured in clashes during protests over the NEET paper leak in several districts. Security forces fired in the air and used baton charges to disperse agitators.
