East Singhbhum forms committee to probe cerebral malaria deaths

Jamshedpur: East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Rajiv Ranjan on Friday constituted a three-member inquiry committee, headed by additional district magistrate (law & order) Mukesh Machua, to investigate cerebral malaria deaths in Potka block.The committee was tasked with identifying any health personnel or officials found guilty of negligence or dereliction of duty in providing medical care and submitting a comprehensive report within three days. “Based on the findings, appropriate action will be initiated,” said the DC.The committee was also instructed to submit recommendations for improving the availability and timely delivery of healthcare services to prevent such incidents.A committee member said the team would primarily investigate the death of 12-year-old Anita Sardar, who died on July 15. A resident of Narda village in Potka block, Anita succumbed to the infection at Sadar Hospital.The committee will also probe the suspected death of 4-year-old Shiv Sardar. A resident of Khariasai village, Shiv died while undergoing treatment for malaria at Sadar Hospital on July 9, the official said.The district administration has confirmed six malaria deaths so far. Of these, four were caused by cerebral malaria, while two resulted from mixed malaria infections. Between June 29 and July 17, a total of 2,361 malaria cases were detected in the district.
