Datke seeks action on illegal hoardings, mobile towers

Nagpur: Raising a string of civic safety concerns in the Assembly, BJP MLA Pravin Datke on Wednesday demanded an immediate crackdown on unauthorised hoardings, mobile towers and alleged violations in high-rise construction across the city.Datke said a large number of unauthorised hoardings came up along main roads, on buildings and in public spaces, often in disregard of provisions under municipal laws, building bylaws and advertisement regulations. “Unauthorised hoardings are not merely an eyesore. They affect traffic discipline, public safety and the city’s appearance,” Datke said, seeking an inspection and inventory of all such structures. He demanded that illegal hoardings be removed without delay and action be taken against those responsible for allowing them. Datke also called for strict enforcement of advertisement norms to prevent their reappearance. The BJP MLA also reminded the House that he earlier raised the absence of a defined mobile tower policy in the state during the Budget session through a calling attention motion. According to him, the minister concerned then assured that a policy would be announced before the next session, but no such policy was framed so far.Datke said the situation was particularly serious in Nagpur, where 450 of the 862 mobile towers were unauthorised. He claimed several towers were installed on private buildings without checking load-bearing capacity, fire safety clearances or obtaining municipal NOCs. “If an untoward incident takes place, who will be held accountable?” he asked. He further flagged alleged violations in high-rise residential and commercial projects. He said homebuyers were being drawn in through attractive advertisements, exaggerated amenities and false promises, while many promised facilities were not provided later. He alleged violations of UDCPR provisions, FSI norms, open spaces, parking, fire safety and other construction rules, and demanded scrutiny of occupancy certificates and final clearances issued to major developers. Datke said unchecked high-rises were adding pressure on water supply, sewage, power, traffic, parking and disaster management systems, and sought action against officials granting approvals without proper verification.
