GURGAON: A fake call centre in Gurugram’s Udyog Vihar phase-5 area was busted and three women were arrested during a police raid, officials said on Sunday.A fake call centre running an online weight-loss scam by posing as health and wellness experts was busted in Gurgaon, with three women arrested and a large cache of electronic devices and SIM cards seized during the raid, police said on Sunday.According to police, the accused impersonated beauticians, dietitians and doctors to convince customers to buy weight-loss productsThe raid was carried out on June 26 at the centre operating from Udyog Vihar Phase-5. Police seized 102 mobile phones, 150 SIM cards and 12 laptopsThe accused were identified as Mandeep, a resident of Aya Nagar, Delhi, Neha, a resident of Rangpuri, Delhi and Varsha, a resident of Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. All three were residing in Gurgaon.A criminal case has been registered against the trio and their associates at the Cyber Crime Police Station (West), police said.During interrogation, police found that the accused operated Facebook and Instagram pages under the name Curest Science and Wellness Pvt. Ltd., advertising herbal weight-loss medicines.People who clicked on the advertisements were contacted by call centre executives and persuaded to buy the products.“The accused falsely claimed that the medicines would reduce weight and assured customers of a 100 per cent refund if the products failed to deliver results. However, when customers did not experience any weight loss and requested refunds, no refunds were provided. Instead, the customers were blocked from further communication,” Gaurav Phogat, ACP cyber crime, said.“The accused had allegedly cheated people in Gujarat of crores of rupees through this call centre and had carried out similar frauds in several other states by selling fake weight-loss medicines,” he added.Phogat said the investigation also revealed that the mobile numbers used in the fraud had been officially issued to the company’s employees, whilewhile the entire operation was allegedly controlled by the company’s Manager, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Director/Owner, and other associates.“We are questioning the accused,” ACP added.(With PTI inputs)
