Two held for assaulting and abusing police during protest

Chennai: Two persons were arrested on charges of abusing and assaulting police after a protest turned violent following a delay in shifting the body of a road accident victim to a govt hospital for post-mortem examination near Vadamadurai in Tiruvallur district.Police said Kalaiyarasan, 40, a daily-wage labourer from Periyar Nagar in Vadamadurai panchayat, died after his motorcycle was hit by a truck near a private college on Friday night. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.An ambulance reached the spot and confirmed Kalaiyarasan’s death. As the ambulance was not authorised to transport the corpse, the crew informed police that a hearse had to be called to shift the body to the govt hospital in Tiruvallur for post-mortem.The hearse did not arrive for more than an hour, triggering anger among local residents, who held a road blockade demanding immediate action. During the protest, an argument broke out between the protesters and police personnel.Police said some protesters abused and shoved police constable Arun Kumar of the Periyapalayam station, causing him to lose consciousness. Police dispersed the crowd with a mild lathi charge.Based on CCTV footage and further investigation, Vengal police arrested Sasikumar, 25, of Periya Colony, and Jayakar, 40, of Vadamadurai, on charges of abusing and assaulting police personnel during the protest. They were produced before a judicial magistrate court in Tiruvallur and remanded in judicial custody.
