2kg of cocaine found on Rajdhani passenger in Surat

Surat: In a major drug bust on a key Gujarat rail corridor, the directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) seized 2kg of high-grade cocaine, worth about Rs 10 crore, and arrested a Navi Mumbai man on Friday. The DRI arrested Fazal Saiyed (39), a resident of Navi Mumbai, at Surat railway station after intercepting him on the Tejas Rajdhani Express going from New Delhi to Mumbai. The DRI team conducted a search and recovered three plastic packets of the drug concealed inside a trolley bag carried by Saiyed, officials said.Saiyed was taken into custody and booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He was produced before a court, which remanded him to DRI custody for one day for further interrogation.A preliminary examination by the Forensic Science Laboratory found that the seized substance was pure, high-quality cocaine, officials said. The DRI is probing the source of the consignment and the network behind the smuggling attempt. Investigators are examining where Saiyed procured the drugs and how they were transported before the train journey. Officials suspect the cocaine originated from a foreign country and are working to identify intended recipients and handlers.Further investigation is under way to trace the supply chain, establish links to trafficking syndicates and determine if similar consignments have been routed through the same corridor. The seizure is part of a series of coordinated DRI operations across airports, railway stations, courier terminals and highways in cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, Patna, Kochi and Ahmedabad. Since last month, officials have seized around 26kg of cocaine and arrested 22 persons, including 14 foreign nationals.Investigators said traffickers used multiple methods to move the contraband, including swallowing drug-filled capsules, concealing narcotics in household and food items, soaking fabrics with drugs and hiding substances in baggage.June 26 is observed as International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, established by the United Nations to strengthen global action against drug abuse and trafficking.
