Ornaments worth Rs 20 lakh stolen from jewellery store in Kalyan

Kalyan: Unidentified thieves decamped with gold and silver ornaments worth nearly Rs 20 lakh after breaking into a jewellery store in Kalyan West in the early hours of Thursday, police said.The robbery came to light when employees arrived at Giva Silver and Gold Jewellery Store on Thursday morning and noticed that the shutter had been tampered with. Upon entering the premises, they found that the jewellery stock was missing and alerted the owner and police.Based on a complaint lodged by shop staffer Manish Jhagade, Bazarpeth police registered a case against unidentified persons. Police said two suspects have been caught on the CCTV camera inside the shop and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend them.Bazarpeth police senior inspector Sureshsingh Gaund said preliminary investigation revealed significant security lapses at the jewellery store. “The shop does not have an internal safety door, and the locker, where jewellery is usually stored after business hours, had reportedly been non-functional for several days,” he said.The burglary has created concern among traders and residents in the locality.
