Madurai: The organs of a 27-year-old road accident victim from Rajapalayam were donated to benefit four patients after he was declared brain dead at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai.The deceased, identified as C Selvakumar of North Street, Jameen Nathampatti in Rajapalayam, sustained a severe head injury in a road accident around 7.30 am on Monday. He was initially treated at Rajapalayam Hospital and later referred to the Trauma Care Centre at GRH, Madurai.Despite treatment, Selvakumar was declared brain dead at 7.13 pm on Wednesday. Following this, his mother, Sundarammal, consented to donate his organs. The organ retrieval procedure was carried out at the Trauma Care Centre.The donated liver was allocated to Apollo Hospital in Chennai. One kidney and the corneas were donated to Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, while the second kidney was sent to Government Medical College and Hospital, Thanjavur.Hospital authorities said four patients benefited from the organ donation.After the organ retrieval, a post-mortem examination was conducted at GRH and the body was handed over to the family. The hospital administration paid homage to the deceased. “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the relatives of the deceased. We thank the police department for their support,” said Dr Arul Sundaresh Kumar, dean of Government Rajaji Hospital.
