Another water scare in Indore as several residents fall sick; sewage leakage into tubewell suspected

INDORE: Residents of Madhya Pradesh’s Mahavir Nagar on Tuesday reported cases of vomiting and diarrhoea, alleging that drinking water had been contaminated due to sewage mixing with a government tubewell supply, according to news agency PTI.The incident comes around six months after a similar episode in Bhagirathpura, where contaminated water led to multiple deaths. Following the latest complaints, the administration halted supply from the old tubewell as a precautionary measure.Indore, which has consistently been ranked among India’s cleanest cities, is now facing renewed concerns over its water supply system.Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) regional officer Vinod Agarwal said senior officials inspected the area in Ward 16 after receiving complaints of possible sewage contamination in the drinking water supply. He said the tubewell has been shut temporarily while the affected sewage line is being cleaned.According to Agarwal, the tubewell is more than 100 years old and was originally installed when Mahavir Nagar was under a Gram Panchayat.Water tankers have now been deployed to supply drinking water to residents, he added.IMC commissioner Kshitij Singhal said a medical survey team has been sent to the locality and further action will depend on its findings.Residents alleged that the water supply had been foul-smelling and unfit for consumption for several days, leading to widespread illness in the area.Rani Malviya, a local resident, said, “My children, husband, and other family members have been suffering from vomiting, diarrhoea, and anxiety for the past eight days. People on our entire street are suffering from similar problems.”She further alleged that sewage leakage into the tubewell had caused the contamination.Several children in the area have also fallen ill, residents claimed.Earlier this year, at least 22 people had died in Bhagirathpura due to contaminated water, according to state government data.
