Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has been awarded the ‘Wind Procurement Champion’ title by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) for its efforts in procuring and promoting wind energy despite having limited wind power generation potential of its own.The award was presented during the national-level Global Wind Day 2026 event held in Goa on Monday. On behalf of the state, UPPCL director (Corporate Planning) Deepak Raizada received the award from Union minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi.Officials said wind energy plays a crucial role in meeting electricity demand during summer months and during evening and night hours when solar power generation is unavailable.Through long-term arrangements with agencies such as the Solar Energy Corporation of India and Power Trading Corporation, Uttar Pradesh has secured about 5,805 MW of wind energy capacity from other states. Of this, nearly 1,630 MW has already become operational and is supplying green power to consumers. As part of its roadmap to meet Renewable Consumption Obligation targets up to 2030, Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited plans to procure an additional 5,000 MW of wind power.
