May 2026 car sales: Maruti, Kia post record sales, Tata EVs shine

India’s passenger vehicle market witnessed strong momentum in May 2026, with several carmakers posting healthy year-on-year growth. Leading the pack was Maruti Suzuki, which recorded its highest-ever monthly sales, while companies like Tata Motors, Hyundai, Mahindra, Kia and Toyota also registered positive growth during the month.

Car sales May 2026: How did the brands perform

Maruti Suzuki India reported total sales of 2,42,688 units in May 2026, marking the company’s best-ever monthly performance. Compared to 1,80,077 units sold in May 2025, total sales grew by nearly 34.8 percent.The company’s domestic sales also touched a new all-time high at 1,93,535 units, registering around 39 percent YoY growth over 1,38,690 units sold during the same month last year. Exports contributed 41,914 units, while sales to other OEMs stood at 7,239 units.Tata Motors also posted strong growth in the passenger vehicle segment. The company sold 59,090 passenger vehicles in the domestic market in May 2026, up 42 percent compared to 41,557 units in May 2025. Total passenger vehicle sales, including exports, reached 59,790 units, rising 42 percent from 42,040 units sold a year ago.Electric vehicles continued to play a major role in Tata Motors’ growth story. Combined domestic and export EV sales climbed 85 percent YoY to a record 10,517 units, compared to 5,685 units in May 2025. Hyundai Motor India reported domestic sales of 47,837 units in May 2026, recording a 9.1 percent YoY increase. With exports of 13,300 units, the company’s total monthly sales stood at 61,137 units, reflecting overall growth of 4.1 percent compared to the same month last year.Mahindra & Mahindra continued its strong run in the SUV segment. The automaker sold 58,021 units in the domestic market in May 2026, registering an 11 percent increase over the year-ago period.Kia India also achieved its highest-ever May sales since entering the Indian market. The company reported wholesale volumes of 27,586 units during the month, recording a 23.6 percent YoY rise over 22,315 units sold in May 2025. Toyota Kirloskar Motor too ended the month on a positive note. The company sold 33,128 units in May 2026, registering a 7 percent increase over 30,864 units sold during the same period last year. This includes 30,574 units sold in the domestic market and 2,554 units exported.
