TRICHY: Turning to technology to fill a campaign gap, a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate in Kumbakonam has deployed holographic AI technology to project a life-size immersive image of party president Vijay at election rallies, compensating for his absence from multiple events. With polling for the state assembly elections scheduled for April 23, and Vijay unable to attend several campaign programmes, candidates are exploring alternative ways to sustain voter engagement. Vinoth Ravi, 32, TVK’s Thanjavur East district secretary contesting from Kumbakonam, has fitted his campaign vehicle with a holographic projection system sourced from Kaamaa Technologies, at a cost of Rs 50,000 per day. “The Election Commission has permitted me to use this technology for four days. It makes me feel energised and confident, as if our ‘Thalapathy’ is right beside me, speaking directly to the people,” said Ravi. The system, mounted on the campaign vehicle, uses holographic projection technology based on the principle of ‘persistence of vision’. It combines a projection fan display, high-speed motors and a synchronised audio system powered by the vehicle’s generator. The setup creates a realistic three-dimensional image of Vijay, from head to thighs, giving the impression that he is standing through the sunroof and addressing the gathering live. The system synchronised with audio from his earlier speeches, creating the impression of a live address from the campaign vehicle. AI helps sync the audio perfectly with the hologram’s lip movements, gestures and body language. The crowd perceives it as a live address. Without good synchronization, it would look like a mismatched video dub.Karthik Mari Pichai, founder and CEO of Kaamaa Technologies, described the initiative as a first in the state’s electoral campaigns. “This is the first use of holographic AI technology in a Tamil Nadu election. It enables a leader to connect with people without being physically present, with high-definition visuals and synchronised audio creating an immersive experience,” he said. Ravi expressed confidence that the innovation would strengthen his campaign in the final phase. “Thalapathy’s presence next to me will take our campaign to the next level and help us secure a victory,” he added.
