Mahadev app accused Sourabh Chandrakar brought to Chhattisgarh; court hearing on Nov 4

Raipur: Sourabh Chandrakar, the alleged kingpin of the Rs 6,000-crore Mahadev online betting scam, was brought to Raipur from Delhi by a CBI team on Tuesday evening, two days after his extradition from Oman. He is scheduled to be produced before the special CBI court in Raipur on Nov 4.Chandrakar was flown to Raipur on flight after Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court granted the CBI two days’ transit remand on Monday. Principal district and sessions judge Nikhil Chopra directed the agency to produce him before the Raipur court by Nov 4.The proceedings witnessed a legal challenge from Chandrakar’s counsel, who argued that Oman had approved his extradition in connection with the Enforcement Directorate’s money-laundering case, but not the CBI cases. Citing the conditions of extradition, the defence contended that the agency could not seek his custody for offences outside the scope of the extradition approval. The CBI countered that a special court in Raipur had already issued an open-ended non-bailable warrant against Chandrakar and that the ED and CBI cases were interconnected. The agency submitted that the Delhi court was required only to decide transit custody, while questions concerning extradition conditions and the permissible scope of prosecution could be examined by the Raipur court.Chandrakar, who was detained in Oman following an Interpol Red Corner Notice, was brought to India on Nov 1. The CBI has filed chargesheets in two cases linked to the alleged betting syndicate, while the ED has filed a prosecution complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.Investigators allege that the syndicate operated an extensive online betting network from abroad, routing proceeds through multiple bank accounts and hawala channels. The CBI has also alleged that protection money was paid to public servants to facilitate its operations.
