AMRITSAR: A 25-year-old man who had recently returned from Canada was killed and his sister injured after a bus operating under the government’s Teerth Yatra Scheme hit their Bullet motorcycle near Gawal Mandi on Ram Tirath Road on Friday. The man was crushed under the bus’s rear wheel. The deceased was identified as Armandeep Singh, a resident of Gehari Mandi village near Jandiala Guru, Cantonment SHO Davinder Singh said.Armandeep had returned from Canada a few days ago and was scheduled to go back shortly. His sister, who was riding pillion, sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.According to reports, the bus was coming from the Ram Tirath side when it hit the motorcycle in the congested Gawal Mandi area.Eyewitnesses alleged that the driver tried to flee without stopping after the accident. Some youths chased the bus, blocked its way and forced it to stop. An angry crowd then smashed its windows and assaulted the driver before handing him over to the police. The pilgrims travelling on the bus, who were from Bathinda, reportedly said they realised an accident had occurred after hearing a loud impact and screams.Davinder Singh said a preliminary investigation suggested that the motorcycle rider lost control, following which the two riders fell and Armandeep came under the bus’s rear wheel. He added that the family had declined to pursue legal action. The accident triggered anger among residents, who alleged that buses and heavy vehicles routinely travel at high speeds through the densely populated locality. Parvesh, a resident of a nearby colony and an eyewitness, demanded the installation of speed breakers and strict enforcement of speed limits to prevent further accidents.
