UP BJP bans personal hoardings ahead of key poll strategy meet

Lucknow: In a move to project organisational unity and keep the focus on Yogi govt’s performance rather than individual leaders, the UP BJP has decided against putting up individual hoardings and banners during the state working committee meeting scheduled on Friday. The meeting, scheduled to be attended by Union home minister Amit Shah besides senior functionaries including BJP national general secretary and UP in-charge Vinod Tawde, will see the party rolling out its formal poll blueprint in the run-up to the state elections due early next year. The party has, instead, asked its workers to put up only party flags and banners highlighting the achievements of the state govt, signalling an attempt to project the organisational gathering as an occasion to put forth a collective showcase. Sources said that the party has decided to put up banners highlighting slogans like “Vikas lagataar, NDA Sarkar”, “Gundon Pe Prahaar, NDA Sarkar”.Analysts said that individual hoardings and banners have often served as a means for leaders to display their political standing, demonstrate proximity to the party’s top leadership and attract attention within the organisation. Restricting such displays, a senior UP BJP leader said, will help the party leadership prevent competing claims to prominence and overshadow the meeting’s larger political purpose. The decision draws a sharp contrast with the party’s earlier practice where the workers intended to give a rousing welcome to its leaders, often using JCBs to shower flowers on them. This, sources said, was squarely abhorred by Tawde, who instead asked the party workers to focus only on mobilising the party workers.By discouraging individual publicity through hoardings, the party leaders, sources said, aimed to ensure that the meeting does not become an occasion for leaders to compete for their visibility in the presence of central leadership.“The mantra before the workers is to put the party at the forefront and their individuality in the background,” said UP BJP spokesperson Anand Dubey. The party has tasked former UP BJP state general secretary and incumbent state office in-charge Govind Narayan Shukla to oversee the preparation of the meeting.Sources said that the party is expected to draw on a range of issues, including infrastructure development, welfare schemes, law and order, employment generation and delivery of public services, to make its case before voters. The prominence given to govt achievements at the meeting would provide an indication of the importance the party gives to communicating its governance record at the grassroots.
