Rehab centre ex-employee to be chargesheeted in obscene video circulation case

Kanpur: In connection with the circulation of an obscene video involving a 17-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man with intellectual disabilities, police said only the former employee of the rehabilitation centre who allegedly circulated the purported video would be chargesheeted in the case.ACP Swaroop Nagar Jyotishree said the decision followed a medical examination of the man seen in the video. The report stated that he did not understand what constituted a crime.According to police, the girl, a resident of Shyam Nagar, and the man studied at the rehabilitation centre. Police said Vipin, the accused, allegedly recorded the video and sent it to the girl’s family. The girl’s family approached the police commissioner, after which an FIR was lodged at Kakadev police station. Police booked Vipin under provisions of the IT Act and initially registered a case against the man on charges of rape and under the Pocso Act.Police served a notice on Vipin and released him. They later took the man to Varanasi for an assessment of his mental condition. The man’s family said he had earlier been examined at Ursula Hospital, where doctors certified that he had an intellectual disability. They alleged that police refused to accept the certificate. The man’s mother further alleged that Vipin sent her the video a year later and threatened to blackmail her during a WhatsApp call. She said she had remained silent to protect the rehabilitation centre’s reputation but would now lodge a complaint against him.
