Kolkata: Thirty-six hours after an 18-year-old, his father and the youth’s friend were forced to walk naked at gunpoint in Behala’s Sarsuna by family members of a 13-year-old girl as punishment for the teen allegedly kissing her, cops on Tuesday paraded three of the accused shirtless and barefoot at the same spot, claiming they were “recreating the crime scene”.The three men — father of the minor girl, her maternal uncle and a friend of the uncle — were brought to Khudiram Pally Manasatala in a police SUV. With ropes tied around their waists, they were made to walk semi-naked over 100 metres as residents lined both sides of the road, many filming the scene. Police and paramilitary personnel formed a human chain to prevent attacks by angry neighbours. The fourth accused in the case is the girl’s mother.While the girl’s parent and uncle were arrested on Monday, the uncle’s friend, Shankar Shaw, was nabbed early Tuesday. Cops are probing if he alerted the girl’s family after allegedly spotting the couple kissing and provided the firearm used to threaten the victims.“At least five others, and even those who shot videos of the three men being forced to walk naked, are under the lens. Raids are on to nab them,” said a senior officer, who declined to elaborate on the “recreation of crime”.In June, Calcutta High Court had observed that police may arrest an accused but cannot deliberately humiliate them. “Under the guise of arrest, the police cannot intentionally disgrace the accused,” the bench had said.Human rights group APDR questioned the police action. Its general secretary Altaf Ahmed said, “Where in police procedure is this allowed? Is it written in Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita? The police are supposed to uphold the law… not take the law into their own hands.”According to the police complaint, the 18-year-old and his friend were dragged to the girl’s house on Sunday after the couple were spotted together. The boy’s father was then summoned and allegedly assaulted.The 18-year-old told newspersons on Tuesday that his girlfriend had called him on Sunday saying she wanted to meet. “I was talking to her and holding her hand when suddenly her maternal uncle’s friend grabbed me by the collar. Then her uncle and her father arrived. They grabbed my friend too and forced us into a car. They gave my father three choices — either shoot me, stab me, or frame me in a false rape case. Otherwise, they said they would strip me and parade me around.” He added, “Love is not a crime. Why was I punished for it?”His father said he was severely assaulted in the presence of other people and then asked to kill his son. “They had a pistol with them. I had no choice but to agree to walk naked through the road. I was exemplary punishment for them,” he said.
