Road caves in near Srirangam
Repair work underway to replace damaged UGD pipeline at Srirangam on Monday

Trichy: Gandhi Road, a crucial link connecting two prominent temples in Srirangam and Thiruvanaikoil, has caved in for the third time on Sunday night, forcing residents and tourists to take a detour. While Trichy corporation proposed to replace the old pipelines at Rs 3.5 crore in 2024, the plan has not made any progress.Following the cave-in, vehicular movement was suspended between Srirangam railway RoB, Nelson Road and Thiruvanaikoil junction. The old reinforced cement concrete (RCC) underground drainage pipes were installed in the 2002-03 financial year at about 10 feet from the ground level. They carry sewage from wards 1 to 4 in Srirangam via Chennai Trunk Road to Panjapur STP through a lifting station. While the pipelines already ruptured twice in the past two years close to Srirangam railway RoB, they yet again developed a snag close to Thiruvanaikoil junction, leading to the cave-in.“A galvanised iron pipe is being fitted as a replacement for the damaged pipe. Repair work will be completed by Monday night. Vehicular movements can resume as usual from Tuesday morning,” a corporation official said. Gas formation in the pipelines often causes the ruptures. Seepage often goes undetected and is noticed only when the road caves in, officials said.Corporation sources said the proposal to replace the old pipelines in Srirangam and Thiruvanaikoil will be fast-tracked.
