RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh police headquarters on Thursday issued a show-cause notice to Rajnandgaon SP Ankita Sharma after a video showing her firing an AK-47 into the air following Shastra Puja on Dussehra went viral.Rajnandgaon Range IG Ajay Yadav said the firing took place at Police Lines on Oct 20 after the traditional weapon-worship ritual. Police headquarters took cognisance of the video in accordance with weapon-handling and safety norms and sought Sharma’s explanation.Senior police officials said blank rounds are generally associated with ceremonial firing where such a practice is followed, and live ammunition is not meant to be used for the purpose.The video triggered debate online, with some users defending the act as part of tradition and others questioning the safety of firing a service weapon in an open area.The IG said Sharma’s reply would be examined and forwarded to police headquarters along with his observations.The controversy widened after videos from other districts, including Raipur, Bilaspur, Raigarh, Durg, Kabirdham and Bastar, also surfaced showing police personnel firing weapons following Dussehra rituals.
