Nashik: The Nashik Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Monday suspended the licence of a canteen run by a well-known educational institute along Trimbak Road after finding unhygienic conditions and cockroaches in some food articles.Senior FDA officials said the department had received repeated complaints from students about poor hygiene at the canteen and the presence of cockroaches and other insects in food items.Acting on the complaints, FDA officials inspected the canteen on the college campus on Oct 16. During the inspection, they found the premises unhygienic and detected cockroaches and other insects in food articles, following which it was decided to take strict action. An FDA official, while talking to TOI, said it is essential that students are provided with safe, clean and high-quality food. However, due to persistent complaints about cleanliness and the discovery of cockroaches and insects in the food, the action was taken in the interest of public health and food safety.Food safety officer Pratik Bhad carried out the operation. FDA appealed to all food business operators to maintain hygiene on their premises, ensure safe food storage and handling, and comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and associated rules and regulations. The FDA further warned that stringent action will be taken against any establishment violating food safety norms.
