Madurai: Residents and morning walkers using the Sellur kanmai path can look forward to safer and better-lit strolls as Madurai corporation has proposed a plan to install lighting along the stretch at Rs 8.7 lakh.Residents welcomed the move, noting that proper illumination along the bund path has been a long-standing requirement for safety. “Many elderly residents among others go walking around the kanmai and other parks daily. There has been a request for lighting and repairs to the walking path around the kanmai for several months now,” said R Muthumanickam, a resident of Avaiyar Street.He said besides lighting arrangements, beautification works, including planting trees, can be be taken up around the kanmai to provide shade for people. “There have also been requests for benches so that people can have a place to sit as well,” he added.“Once completed, the new lighting is expected to enhance public safety, deter anti-social activities during evening hours and encourage more residents to use the walking area,” a senior corporation official said. Further beautification projects will be carried out after this project, the official added.
