Powering up: Bhopal transmission line gets capacity boost
Bhopal-Amarawad Khurd 132kV transmission line being upgraded to carry more power. Existing ACSR Panther conductors to be replaced with high-temperature low-sag (HTLS) conductors.

Bhopal: With electricity demand rising in the state capital, Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company (MP Transco) has begun upgrading the 132kV Bhopal-Amarawad Khurd transmission line to increase its power-carrying capacity without building a new transmission corridor. The project involves replacing existing ACSR Panther conductors on the double-circuit line with high-temperature low-sag (HTLS) conductors, which can carry higher current while maintaining relatively low sag at high temperatures. The technology allows transmission capacity to be increased through existing infrastructure, avoiding the challenge of acquiring right of way for new lines in densely populated urban areas. The capacity of associated 132kV feeder bays at Amarawad Khurd and MANIT substations, along with the 220kV Bhopal substation, is also being upgraded. The work is expected to strengthen the transmission network, improve its ability to handle rising demand and provide greater flexibility in managing power supply linked to the two substations.Energy minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar said HTLS technology was being used to strengthen Bhopal’s transmission infrastructure in line with the city’s growing electricity demand.MP Transco had earlier deployed the technology on the transmission line connecting the 400kV Sukhisewania substation to the 220kV Govindpura substation. While the upgrade will add transmission capacity, it does not guarantee fewer power cuts, as outages can also result from faults in distribution lines, local transformers and other parts of the electricity network.
