Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to former Bidhannagar mayor Sabyasachi Dutta in an alleged extortion case, while rejecting the bail plea of former fire services minister Sujit Bose in a case connected with alleged irregularities in municipal recruitments.A single-judge bench of Justice Chaitali Chatterjee (Das) granted interim bail to Dutta in connection with the 2018 case. Dutta was arrested from his Rajarhat residence by Bidhannagar North Police in June. After a lower court rejected his bail application, he approached the high court.Dutta was arrested following allegations that Rs 1 crore was demanded from a local businessman on his instructions. Investigators filed a 1,730-page charge sheet before the Barasat court within 57 days of his arrest. While co-accused Bidyut Gangopadhyay was granted bail earlier, Dutta was refused relief. ED later joined the police probe to investigate alleged illegal financial transactions linked to the matter. Dutta is likely to walk out of prison ahead of Durga Puja.In a separate hearing, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh’s bench denied bail to Bose, arrested by ED on May 11 for allegedly recommending names illegally for South Dum Dum Municipality jobs. Justice Ghosh said a detailed order would be uploaded later. The matter had reached Justice Ghosh’s bench after Justice Suvra Ghosh recused herself from the case in Aug, after one of Bose’s advocates allegedly entered her chamber in her absence and requested a case file from her personal secretary.
