Rain brings stubble fires to zero in Punjab; UP moves ahead

Bathinda: Farm fires dropped to zero in Punjab on Sunday after rain lashed parts of the state, while Uttar Pradesh moved ahead of the state and Madhya Pradesh recorded a much higher count.Meanwhile, MP continues to go blasting as it again recorded the maximum stubble burning cases, 44, on Sunday, followed by 10 in Rajasthan, 3 in UP and 2 in Uttarakhand, taking the count to 572 in the seven states till Oct 11.Madhya Pradesh has till now recorded 277 cases, followed by 121 in Uttar Pradesh, 118 in Punjab, 45 in Rajasthan, 7 in Haryana, 3 in Uttarakhand and 1 in Delhi.As per the Consortium for Research on Agroecosystem Monitoring and Modeling from Space (CREAMS), stubble burning has so far been reported from 87 districts, including 12 districts in Punjab. At 60, Amritsar district has reported the highest number of farm fires among the 7 states.Penal action has also been initiated in Punjab, with 11 FIRs registered under section 223 of the BNS (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant); Rs 2.2-lakh environmental compensation (EC) imposed in 43 cases. Of the total penalty, Rs 1.15 lakh has been recovered.
