Some homes come with history. Others have history literally written into the ground. In Beverly Hills, the longtime residence of Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas and his wife, Anne Douglas, offered both. Its garden path, lined with pavers bearing the signatures of more than 40 celebrated names from the entertainment world, transformed an otherwise elegant estate into a piece of living Hollywood memorabilia. Decades after the couple purchased the property, that unusual feature helped make it one of the area’s most talked-about listings. The estate, known as “The Stars of Beverly Hills,” was listed for $7.495 million in December and ultimately sold for $9.015 million, attracting a buyer willing to pay a premium for its unusual connection to Hollywood’s golden era, states an online report by Realtor.
A Hollywood legacy underfoot
According to January 2022 report, Kirk and Anne Douglas purchased the Beverly Hills property in 1976 for $400,000. Over the years, their home became a gathering place for some of the biggest names in entertainment, with dinner parties providing the inspiration for its extraordinary garden path.Among the stars who left their signatures were Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Roger Moore, Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Fonda. Members of the Douglas family also added their names, turning the pathway into a private version of the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame, the report claims. The collection eventually grew to more than 40 celebrity autographs, giving the property an element of provenance that would be difficult, if not impossible, to recreate today, it adds.Kirk Douglas, celebrated for films including Spartacus and Paths of Glory, died in 2020 at 103. Anne Douglas died the following year at 102. Their long life together and place within Hollywood history added another layer of significance to the residence.
Classic Beverly Hills living
According to Realtor report, beyond its famous walkway, the 1921-built home offers the proportions and character of a traditional Beverly Hills estate. The single-story residence spans 4,648 square feet and contains four bedrooms and five bathrooms. Its interiors include formal living and dining spaces alongside a family room, while the gourmet kitchen features a breakfast bar and butler’s pantry. Multiple sets of glass doors open towards the grounds, creating an easy transition between the home’s interior and outdoor entertaining areas. The property sits on a large, landscaped lot shaded by mature trees, offering privacy despite its central location. A resort-style swimming pool forms the centrepiece of the outdoor space, while a two-story guesthouse provides additional accommodation.
A new chapter
The estate’s location adds to its appeal. It sits close to the Beverly Hills Hotel, Rodeo Drive and the restaurants, shopping and amenities that have made Beverly Hills synonymous with luxury. The home is also positioned as a property that can evolve with its next owner. While its historic character remains intact, the residence offers scope for updating or expansion. Still, the most memorable part of the estate may remain the simplest: a garden path carrying the names of Hollywood royalty. For the buyer who paid $9.015 million, the property is not merely a Beverly Hills address, but a tangible piece of the city’s cinematic past.Images Courtesy: People and Mansion Global
