Patna: Two women died in the maternity ward of Jamui Sadar Hospital within hours of each other on Sunday with their families alleging delayed medical intervention. The hospital management and district administration said the deaths were being investigated and action would be taken if anyone was found responsible.The first case involved 28-year-old Anita Kumari of Nariyana village under Khaira police station. Her husband Sujit Kumar said she developed labour pain on Saturday night and was taken to Khaira health centre before being referred to Jamui Sadar Hospital. She was admitted around 11pm, but her family alleged no woman doctor was present in the maternity ward. Anita died around 5am on Sunday before delivering her third child.The second case involved 26-year-old Astha Kumari of Chauhandih village, also under Khaira police station. She underwent a Caesarean section at sadar hospital on Saturday and delivered a baby boy. Her condition deteriorated around midnight, after which she was treated by a doctor from the emergency department and improved temporarily. She died around 10am on Sunday.Astha’s relatives placed her body at the hospital’s main gate and staged a protest, demanding action.Sadar hospital deputy superintendent Dr Thanish Kumar said the matter was being investigated. “If the allegation of absence from duty is confirmed, necessary action will be taken against the concerned woman doctor,” he said, adding that no written complaint had been submitted by the families.Circle officer Saurabh Kumar met the families and asked them to submit a written complaint. “Those found responsible after the inquiry will face action,” he said.
