Fire system at Purohit Ji Ka Katla remains defunct even after blaze

Jaipur: More than two weeks after a fire broke out in Manihari Bazaar at Purohit Ji Ka Katla on Sept 17, the fire safety system at the market remains non-functional. At the same time, Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has been issuing fire NOC notices to hotels, restaurants, coaching centres and other establishments ahead of Diwali. The situation has raised questions over why the fire safety arrangements have not been restored in the market where the blaze exposed the gaps. Around two weeks ago, JMC had formed a committee to inspect and restore the fire safety system in the Walled City. The committee was given a week to assess the system and complete the process of making it operational. However, even after the deadline passed, there has been little change on the ground.Purohit Ji Ka Katla Traders Association president Kamal Pitliya said, “The corporation has not learnt anything even from such a major fire. A team came on Sept 20, checked the water flow and left. No one has come back to fix the system, and we do not even know if it will ever be repaired.”JMC fire deputy chief Durga Kumari said, “JMC regularly serves notices for fire NOCs. With Diwali approaching, the process has also been expedited. Investigation into the fire safety system in the Walled City is also underway. The systems will be repaired before Diwali.”With the fire safety system at the affected market still awaiting repairs, concerns remain over the safety of traders and visitors, particularly at a time when the civic body has stepped up fire safety inspections and notices across the city ahead of Diwali.
