DEHRADUN: Late Monday night, a protest erupted within Doon University’s campus in Dehradun after insects were found in the dinner served at a girls’ hostel. Students claimed that complaints over poor food quality have been ignored in the past as well.The incident was reported from Alaknanda hostel where live insects were seen in the salad served for dinner. Afterwards, students mobilised and demanded action against the mess operator.“This is not the first time that poor-quality food has been served in the hostel. We have complained on earlier occasions as well but no action has been taken so far. Authorities should immediately change the operator,” said a student on account of anonymity.Students then gathered outside the VC house and demanded she immediately address these concerns. They were then dispersed by local police, with the management claiming that action will be taken soon. A fresh dinner overseen by uni management was served around 11.30 pm.The hostel has around 500 students who pay Rs 2,150 per month for the food.VC Surekha Dangwal told TOI that a different caterer has been roped in for meal preparation from Tuesday for a week.“The previous caterer was on extension. Following this incident, we have brought in a new caterer for this week and we will keep an eye on the food quality after which we will assess the situation further. Compromises on student health and food quality will not be tolerated,” she said.The timing of the protest merely hours before the student elections has also been brought into question, with many claiming politicisation of the incident.
