Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday placed 3,142 kg of ghee worth Rs 12.9 lakh under a stop-to-sell order after five samples of different brands were found substandard. The action followed raids on three distributor units in Vatva, Kathwada and Ghodasar, from where eight fresh samples were collected and sent for laboratory testing. One shop of a distributor in Ghodasar was also sealed for operating without a food licence.AMC health and food department had recently collected 11 samples of pure ghee from various units in Madhupura market. Five samples collected from HP Foods in Madhupura were declared substandard after laboratory testing.Following the test results, AMC teams on Monday inspected distributor units associated with the brands at Platinum Industrial Park in Vatva, Shree Food Product in Kathwada and Arihant Marketing in Ghodasar.Arihant Marketing, which was distributing three of the failed brands, was found operating without a food licence. The unit was consequently sealed.AMC health and food department stated, “The manufacturing units of all these brands are located in various districts across Gujarat; hence Gujarat govt will be informed to take further action. Moreover, during these raids, a total of 3,142 kg of ghee stock worth Rs 12.9 lakh seized from the distributors was issued a stop-to-sell order, and eight fresh samples have been collected and sent for laboratory testing.”An AMC official said, “We appeal to distributors and manufacturing units to maintain laboratory testing reports corresponding to every batch number of ghee available for sale or distribution. Producing these reports upon requirement is mandatory to verify the quality of the ghee. Since there is a risk of adulteration in loose ghee, consumers should also exercise caution while making purchases.”
