Itanagar: More than six weeks after a cloudburst triggered landslides and flash floods in Arunachal Pradesh’s Dibang Valley, the family of an Army havaldar from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh is still waiting for news of his whereabouts.Havaldar Upendra Yadav, 38, of the 5th Grenadiers, went missing on Aug 14 after the disaster struck the Pasu Pani area at around 4.30pm. The sudden deluge swept away Army shelters and left five personnel missing.Rescue teams comprising the Army, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and local emergency personnel have recovered three bodies. Yadav and another soldier remain untraced.At Yadav’s home in Mohammadella village, his family continues to wait for updates. His 24-year-old nephew, Anurag Yadav, said the prolonged uncertainty had taken a heavy emotional toll. “My uncle was on active duty in Pasu Pani when the cloudburst struck. More than a month has passed, and he is yet to be found,” Anurag said.He said Subedar Major Sanjay Chauhan had been regularly updating the family about the search operations. However, the relatives are seeking a clear account of what happened to Yadav and want the search efforts to continue.“We are still holding on to the hope that he will return safely. But we cannot continue living in this painful limbo. We need a definite answer from the authorities,” Anurag said.The family has launched social media appeals and poster campaigns to draw attention to the missing soldier and urge civil society to support the search.Attempts to obtain an official update from defence authorities were unsuccessful. Calls and messages to the defence PRO in Tezpur went unanswered, while a senior officer of the 5th Grenadiers said he was not authorised to speak to the media.As search teams continue operations in the difficult riverbeds and rugged terrain of Dibang Valley, Yadav’s family remains at home in Azamgarh, hoping for his safe return or definitive information about his fate.
