Ahmedabad: Two city residents were allegedly cheated of a total of Rs 3.2 lakh in separate cyberfraud cases involving a Facebook Marketplace mobile phone deal and a fake credit card activation link, police said.In the first case, a 41-year-old corporate firm manager came across a Facebook Marketplace advertisement offering a smartphone for around Rs 1.3 lakh. After contacting the seller through the platform, he was allegedly referred to another person who shared the location of a house where the phone was said to be available.The victim, accompanied by a friend, went to the location and was shown a foldable smartphone by a man present there. The caller allegedly instructed him to make the payment online through QR codes sent via WhatsApp. Trusting the arrangement, the victim transferred Rs 50,000 and his friend transferred Rs 80,000.According to the complaint, the man who showed them the phone said he would hand over the device once the payment was credited to his bank account. However, he later refused to deliver the phone. He contacted the cybercrime helpline and later lodged a complaint with Ranip police on Saturday.In the second incident, a 42-year-old woman lost Rs 1.8 lakh after receiving a call from a person posing as an employee of a private bank’s credit card department.The caller sent her a WhatsApp link for verification. After she opened the link and completed the verification process, an unauthorised transaction of Rs 1.8 lakh was allegedly made from her card.The woman filed a complaint with Paldi police on Saturday.
