Kolkata: Widespread political violence erupted across six wards of Jadavpur assembly constituency on Saturday evening after a bike-borne mob went on a multi-hour rampage, vandalising several Trinamool and CPM party offices and targeting the home of a former MLA and ex-councillors aligned to Mamata Trinamool.The unrest, which unfolded over four hours, affected municipal wards 96, 99, 100, 101, 102, 105 and 106, while spilling onto parts of neighbouring Narendrapur. The attackers ransacked the office of former TMC MLA Debabrata Majumdar at Bijoygarh Market before storming his residence at 3/11 Bijoygarh, where they damaged property and physically assaulted his elder brother and sister-in-law.Simultaneously, assailants raided the home of former ward 102 councillor Seema Ghosh, where women party workers were allegedly assaulted and molested. Four TMC offices in Anandapally, Bijoygarh and Baghajatin were vandalised and locked shut, with the mob warning locals to stay indoors until the upcoming civic polls. A similar assault on the office of former TMC councillor Tarun Mondal was thwarted only after police deployed a baton charge. The bike-borne gang also tore down CPM party flags, ransacked an office at Kusum Kanan and damaged a martyr’s memorial in ward 96.The wave of attacks triggered sharp political reactions and accusations across party lines. Beleghata MLA and Mamata Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh termed the violent spree an example of lawlessness, directly pointing fingers at BJP while raising questions about police inaction.“This is nothing short of lawlessness. Ex-TMC councillors, MLA and MMiC members were targeted creating havoc… Our former councilor Vasundhara Goswami has informed us how local thugs are vandalising our homes and party offices. Are we living under jungle rule? Even when the police are called, they do not come. We can clearly identify those who attacked our office yet no one is being arrested. We have learned that CPM workers were also attacked. Our neta Mamatadi had long ago warned about the fascist nature of BJP, and identified them as the real enemy. We must protest this together. We were in office for 15 years, and nothing like this was ever reported,” Ghosh said.Dismissing allegations of his party’s involvement, BJP seniors rejected any link to the violence, attributing the clashes instead to factional infighting within Trinamool Congress. “BJP has no involvement. Debabrata Majumdar was once with our party, but later joined Trinamool. His father had been connected with us since the founding days. It is simply not possible that someone from our party would go and vandalise Keshab Majumdar’s (his father’s) house. His elder brother is also associated with us. So no one would dare touch that house. In that family, Debabrata is irrelevant; that house carries the memory and presence of his father. No local BJP worker could have done such a thing there,” Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said, before alleging, “Some people are carrying out attacks while pretending to be BJP members, trying to tarnish our image. Damaging party offices or martyr memorials is not part of BJP’s culture.”He added, “TMC knows very well that this is due to its own internal division. I will request CM Suvendu Adhikari to ensure cop action against any hooliganism as we have zero tolerance for any such acts.”TMC held a rally from Bijoygarh to Baghajatin on Sunday, reclaiming their locked office at Bijoygarh and facilitating the return of supporters to Panchasayar who had fled their homes over the previous 48 hours. CPM seniors Sujan Chakraborty and Sudip Sengupta appealed to “BJP workers to restrain their hooligans” and asserted that any violence against supporters would be thwarted.Senior police officers said that a probe into complaints filed was underway.
