Gurgaon spa crackdown: Probe widens to trafficking network, Jharsa couple held

GURGAON: What began as a crackdown on illegal activities at spa centres in Sector 90 has widened into a probe into an alleged organised trafficking network, with Gurgaon police tracing the trail to a Jharsa man who allegedly used websites, WhatsApp chats, PGs, guest houses and vehicles to facilitate the racket.The development came during questioning of a woman rescued in Friday night’s operation at Sapphire Mall, police said.Based on the leads provided by her, police apprehended Sahil, a Jharsa resident, along with his wife. Investigators are now probing the couple’s alleged role and their links with a network of 10-12 associates.Police found during the preliminary investigation that Sahil allegedly operated websites and used WhatsApp communications to facilitate the activities.“We are examining whether the premises and vehicles linked to him were being used to move or accommodate women and whether the network extended beyond Gurgaon.” a police officer said.The rescued woman also told investigators that she had allegedly been forcibly kept at a premises in Jharsa while she was a minor.Police are verifying the disclosure and examining whether other women or minors were similarly confined or exploited.Acting on the fresh leads, police on Saturday night conducted a joint raid at a PG in Sector 38 under the supervision of ITPA Nodal ACP Abhilaksh Joshi, along with Haryana State Commission for Women chairperson Usha Priyadarshini.“Thirteen men and eight women, including foreign nationals, were found at the premises and apprehended for questioning.” the officer added.“We carried out yesterday’s action and, in continuation of that, when the victim was questioned, new facts came to light. Following up further on the same syndicate their modus operandi came to light here, that this kind of thing is also happening in such PGs, and on Saturday we basically conducted a joint operation on this. A case will be registered at Sadar police station.” ACP Joshi said.He added, “We have also found foreigners during the raid, and found 8 women and 13 men, their foreigners’ registration is also being checked, and if any violation of C Form is found, then action will also be taken against them under the Foreigners Act.”He further said, physical evidences have been found which prove that basically prostitution and a sex racket of this kind was being run here along with drug activities.ACP continued that such raids are likely to continue in the city.A fresh FIR under applicable provisions of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act and Foreigners Act is being registered at Sadar police station.Police are also checking the immigration status and backgrounds of the foreign nationals and their possible links to the suspected network.The action followed a six-hour operation at Sector 90 on Friday night, during which around 18 spa centres were checked and eight were found allegedly operating as fronts for illegal activities.Around 30 women and 20 men were found at the establishments and questioned.
