COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Consumer Cause has flagged safety and design lapses of the 10.1km Avinashi Road elevated expressway (G D Naidu Flyover) and urged the Tamil Nadu govt to take immediate corrective measures and commission an independent road safety audit.In a representation to the chief minister, the group alleged that several elements in the approved design had been either altered or omitted or left incomplete, and that these deviations had been made without adequate transparency or review by the District Road Safety Committee.Key issues raised include incomplete service roads at multiple locations. Near PSG College Of Technology in Peelamedu, vehicles have to merge into the main carriageway between flyover pillars at an approximately 80-degree angle, with poor visibility of oncoming traffic. The group sought completion of the service road and redesign of the merge at a safer point beyond the pillar zone. A similar concern was flagged near Aravind Eye Hospital, where it sought a continuous service road leading to a properly designed merging point beyond the down ramp.The representation cited an incomplete up ramp near the Anna Statue and the dropping of a proposed service road from the PRS ground along the up ramp.K Kathirmathiyon, secretary of the organisation, said a major concern was the absence of pedestrian infrastructure. He stated that five pedestrian subways included in the original design were not provided along the 10.1km corridor and its extended 15km stretch, and that footpaths were not provided along the corridor.The group said 32 bus bays originally proposed and approved were not provided, forcing buses to stop on the carriageway and increasing risk for passengers and other road users.It stated that while the highways department informed the organisation that two pre-opening audits were conducted, no post-opening audit had been carried out. The group demanded a comprehensive audit covering service roads, pedestrian facilities, footpaths, bus bays, merging points, access points, signage and road markings. It called for all service roads to comply with Indian Roads Congress guidelines and the sanctioned design, particularly on continuity, width, sight distance and merging geometry.A senior highways department official said several works, including underground drainage on the left side, were not carried out in anticipation of metro rail project, as metro pillars were expected in that area. According to the official, pending works will be completed once the metro project is confirmed and govt orders are issued, with funds kept in reserve.The Rs 1,791cr flyover was inaugurated on Oct 9, 2025.
