Actor Vimal has received temporary relief in a cheque dishonour case linked to a Rs 4.5 crore loan. A Chennai court has stayed the one-year jail sentence previously handed down to the actor, subject to a financial condition. The order came after Vimal challenged the earlier judgment in the case.As part of the relief, the court directed Vimal to deposit Rs 10 lakh before the trial court within 60 days. The case is connected to a financial dispute dating back to the making of his 2018 film Mannar Vagaiyara.
Vimal cheque bounce case linked to Rs 4.5 crore film loan
As reported by Nakkheeran, the dispute began when Vimal, who produced and acted in Mannar Vagaiyara, reportedly borrowed Rs 4.5 crore from a financier named Gopi for the film. Vimal had allegedly issued a cheque towards repayment of the amount. However, when the cheque was presented, it was reportedly dishonoured due to insufficient funds in the bank account. Gopi subsequently filed a case against the actor over the alleged cheque fraud. The matter was taken up before a Chennai court, which considered the allegations against Vimal in connection with the disputed financial transaction.
Court sentences Vimal to one year in jail
Vimal was subsequently found guilty and sentenced to one year of imprisonment. He was also ordered to repay the amount involved in the dispute. Following the judgment, Vimal’s legal team challenged the decision before the 15th Additional Sessions Court in Chennai. His side sought a stay on the sentence while the appeal against the trial court’s order is considered.
Vimal gets stay on one-year sentence with Rs 10 lakh condition
While hearing Vimal’s appeal, the sessions court granted a stay on the one-year sentence, subject to a financial condition. The actor has been directed to deposit Rs 10 lakh in the trial court within 60 days. The order was issued on August 4. The stay means that the one-year prison sentence remains suspended for now while the legal proceedings in the case continue.
