The 2026 Emmy Awards have kicked off on a historic note, with Jean Smart making television history with her fifth Emmy win for ‘Hacks’. The actress took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of tenacious stand-up comic Deborah Vance, becoming the first performer to win the acting prize for every season of a show’s run. “What a ride this has been!” Smart said from the stage after thanking the show’s creators.Smart’s achievement puts her in rare Emmy company, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series six times during the seven-season run of Veep, previously coming closest to the feat.As the Hacks era comes to an end following its final season on HBO Max, Smart’s milestone has set the tone for an evening already filled with memorable wins.Allison Janney has also taken home the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for ‘The Diplomat’, while Matthew Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for ‘The Beast in Me’.
