Tailoring instructor caught on charge of smuggling Ganja inside Kalamba jail

Kolhapur: A tailoring instructor was on Friday caught red-handed trying to smuggle ganja inside Kolhapur’s Kalamba jail.According to the police, around 90 grams of ganja was recovered from the instructor’s undergarment. The accused, 52-year-old Uttam Dhondiram Patil, a resident of Aptenagar, was produced in court and was remanded in police custody till Monday.“During a routine check up of the visitors on Friday the security found a suspicious object hidden in Patil’s undergarment. Upon frisking him, the personnel found ganja hidden which was most likely for the inmates. After the jail authorities conveyed us this information, we arrested Patil. We are going to investigate the source of the banned substance and for whom was it being smuggled,” inspector Kiran Londe of Juna Rajwada police station said, adding Patil worked as a tailoring instructor for the last four years.The police have taken custody of CCTV footage of the last 15 days to trace the movement of the accused. Internal inquiry has been initiated by additional jail superintendent Vivek Zende.Kalamba Central Jail is one of the most important prisons in the state. In July 2023, a subhedar level personnel was arrested while smuggling 171 grams of the contraband inside the jail.
