‘Rocking Star’ Yash’s much-awaited theatrical outing, ‘Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups’, has suffered a setback at the box office, particularly with its English version, which has now been withdrawn from theatres after just seven days.Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the period action drama features a star-studded ensemble cast including Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi and Rukmini Vasanth. While the film opened to a promising start, its English version failed to sustain momentum at the ticket window.
English version of ‘Toxic’ withdrawn after weak theatrical run
‘Toxic’ hit theatres on August 26 and was shot simultaneously in Kannada and English before being dubbed into Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. However, the English version arrived in Indian cinemas only on September 4.According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the English version received a lukewarm response and was eventually discontinued by exhibitors. The version reportedly opened with limited shows across just four cities — Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gurugram and Noida.Rather than witnessing an expected rise in collections over the weekend, the English version reportedly saw its business decline steadily. By the beginning of the following week, its collections had dropped significantly, with midweek numbers falling to only a fraction of its opening-day business. With footfalls remaining low and the collections showing no signs of recovery, distributors reportedly decided to withdraw the English version from theatres from Friday, September 11, bringing its theatrical run to an early end after just seven days.
No official statement from ‘Toxic’ makers yet
The makers of ‘Toxic’ have not yet issued an official statement regarding the early withdrawal of the English version from cinemas. The development comes as the film continues its theatrical run in other language versions. While the English version has struggled to find an audience, the overall box office performance of the Yash-led film continues to be tracked across India and overseas.According to Sacnilk, ‘Toxic’ has so far recorded a total India gross collection of Rs 296.60 crore, while its India net collection stands at Rs 248.50 crore.
