Trichy: A chilli trader was arrested in Tiruvarur on Tuesday on charges of smuggling nearly 90kg of banned tobacco products while pretending to buy and transport chilli from Andhra Pradesh.A Halikul Jaman, 50, from Manjakollai in Nagapattinam district, operates a chilli trading business and maintains a godown in Adiyakkamangalam, Tiruvarur district.On Sept 5, Tiruvarur anti-narcotics task force arrested 50-year-old Narayan Singh, who ran a fancy store, for possessing around 70kg of banned tobacco products. On Tuesday, the team learnt that one of the principal suppliers was transporting a substantial quantity of banned tobacco items. Officers intercepted Halikul Jaman while he was travelling on his motorcycle and recovered the contraband from him.Police said Jaman regularly travelled to Guntur in Andhra Pradesh to procure chilli and used the opportunity to obtain banned tobacco products as well.Tiruvarur town police registered a case against him. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is on.
