The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has launched a dedicated website, nomoresatyaniketan.in, under its ‘Aakhir Kab Tak?’ campaign, on safety concerns in paying guest (PG) accommodations and student housing across Delhi.The initiative comes in the wake of the tragic incident in Satya Niketan, which has once again raised questions over the safety of buildings used as accommodation by students. Through the new platform, ABVP is seeking to give students a direct channel to identify hazards, report them and seek administrative intervention.
‘Check Your PG ’ puts safety assessment in students’ hands
A key feature of the website is ‘Check Your PG’, which enables students to conduct a preliminary assessment of their accommodation against 10 safety indicators.The initiative is aimed at helping students recognise warning signs that may otherwise go unnoticed, particularly in buildings where construction, fire safety or structural conditions may pose risks.The platform also carries a ‘Spot the Signal’ facility. Students can anonymously upload photographs showing cracks, unsafe construction and other potential hazards. ABVP said the mechanism has been designed to protect the identity of students while ensuring that safety concerns can be brought to the notice of the authorities.The website also provides helpline and emergency assistance information for students who may need immediate support.
ABVP puts eight demands on the table
Beyond creating a reporting mechanism, ABVP has used the campaign to push for concrete action from the administration. The organisation has listed eight demands concerning student accommodation and accountability.Among its key demands is fixing responsibility for the Satya Niketan incident and conducting structural and fire-safety audits of PG accommodations in student-dominated areas within 30 days.The organisation has also demanded safe accommodation and assistance for affected students and families, adequate hostel infrastructure, registration of an FIR and an independent investigation into the incident.Another major demand is the introduction of a PG Regulation Act in Delhi, aimed at bringing greater oversight to the rapidly expanding private accommodation sector catering to students.
Delhi’s student housing faces renewed scrutiny
The website launch comes at a time when the safety of student accommodation in Delhi is facing renewed scrutiny. With large numbers of students dependent on PGs and privately rented buildings, concerns over structural safety, fire preparedness and regulatory oversight have become increasingly difficult to ignore.ABVP’s campaign has therefore attempted to move the discussion beyond the immediate aftermath of an incident. Its central demand is for a system in which unsafe accommodation can be identified, reported and acted upon before it turns into a tragedy.Whether the campaign leads to tighter enforcement and stronger regulation will now depend on the response of the Delhi administration and other concerned authorities.
