Patna: Bihar Police arrested more than 68,000 accused, busted 14 illegal gun factories and seized hundreds of firearms, large quantities of narcotics and over 6.57 lakh litres of illicit liquor during a statewide anti-crime crackdown between June and July this year, officials said on Monday.Police said 68,324 accused, including 2,551 notorious criminals and 10 extremists, were arrested during the period. The operations led to the recovery of 710 illegal firearms and 3,061 rounds of ammunition and the dismantling of 14 illegal mini gun factories.Additional director general (law and order) K Suhita Anupam said a total of 23,958 wanted accused involved in major crimes were arrested between June and Aug. Those arrested included 1,270 murder accused, 214 accused in dacoity cases, 473 in robbery cases and 827 accused involved in attacks on police personnel. Police also recovered 914 firearms and 3,779 cartridges during the operations.A special drive against absconding and wanted criminals conducted from Aug 12 to 14 resulted in the arrest of 1,435 accused, including 79 wanted in murder cases, six in dacoity cases, 28 in robbery cases, 38 accused of attacking police personnel, 48 booked under the SC/ST Act, 35 under the Arms Act and 15 in rape cases. Police recovered 26 firearms and 195 cartridges during the three-day operation.As part of the crackdown, police checked 1.81 lakh vehicles between June and Aug and took action against 18,180 vehicles, collecting fines of Rs 2.47 crore. They also arrested 2,035 wanted accused and executed 1,008 warrants.Meanwhile, Bihar Police has announced plans to strengthen riot-control capabilities by creating 49 riot-control companies across districts and subdivisions.ADG (headquarters) Jitendra Kumar said the units, supported by 294 vehicles, would be equipped to respond to riots and violent incidents within 20 minutes of receiving information.A statewide attachment drive carried out from July 11 to 20 saw the execution of 5,009 attachment orders, while preventive policing was intensified with over 2.38 lakh actions under Section 126 and more than 67,000 actions under Section 135.The anti-narcotics and anti-liquor campaign yielded significant seizures. Police recovered 2.309 kg of heroin, 6,728.648 kg of cannabis and over 6.57 lakh litres of illicit liquor. They also seized more than Rs 3.02 crore in Indian currency, Rs 46.12 lakh in Nepalese currency, 333 grams of gold, 1.283 kg of silver and counterfeit currency worth Rs 1.38 crore.
