Salem: A tribal woman died at the Attur govt Hospital on Thursday, after her health deteriorated following a sterilisation surgery at Pethanaickenpalayam primary health centre in Salem district.The deceased has been identified as M Sumathi, 23, of Soolankurichi hill village in Karumanthurai. She was referred to Attur govt hospital soon after the sterilisation procedure but died without responding to treatment. She had delivered her third child about 45 days ago.Over 100 relatives and villagers including her husband Matheawaran, 30, laid siege to Salem district collectorate in protest. They alleged that a botched surgery had caused her death and demanded justice.Police held talks with the protesters and officials assured them that a proper inquiry would be held against the doctors concerned and appropriate action taken. The protesters subsequently withdrew their protest.Attur rural police have registered a case and are investigating.
